Daedalus

« Back to Glossary Index

Daedalus was a legendary Athenian inventor, craftsman, and architect. His soaring intellect and genius was matched perhaps only by the tragedy that his creations often caused to him and those around him.

Daedalus is most famous for designing the mythical Labyrinth of Crete, an inescapable maze built to imprison the Minotaur. Daedalus later found himself imprisoned there by Minos, wbo feared that he would reveal the Labyrinth’s secrets. To escape, he and his son Icarus crafted wings from weathers and wax. Though Daedalus flew to freedom, Icarus flew too close to the sun and his wings melted, causing him to plunge to his death.
