Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, located in the Mediterranean Sea. In ancient times, it was home to the sophisticated Minoan civilisation which takes its name from the mythical King Minos of Crete.
In Greek mythology, Crete was ruled by King Minos and was a place of wonder and terror – known as the birthplace of Zeus but also home to the Labyrinth and the ferocious Minotaur.
