Aristeia is a Greek word that roughly means “excellence.” It’s used in epic poetry to describe a scene or moment where a hero fights at the absolute height of their powers; their “ultimate” heroic moment. An aristeia is more than just “winning a fight”, it’s the shining moment that proves a warrior worthy of being remembered forever in song, long after they have passed away. It is these moments that define a hero’s legacy, which is why the absence of an aristeia – or, worse, the failure of an aristeia – can be just as significant as a successful one.
