Athens

« Back to Glossary Index

Ancient Athens was one of the most powerful and culturally influential city-states in Ancient Greece, located in the region of Attica. The Athens of ancient myth and history was a much smaller space than the modern sprawling capital you may be familiar with.

At its height, Athens was the birthplace of democracy and the beating cultural heart of the Greek world, home to philosophers like Socrates and Plato, with influences on drama, art and literature that still shapes our civilisation today.
