Ariadne

« Back to Glossary Index

Ariande is the daughter of King Minos of Crete and is most famous for helping the Athenian hero Theseus escape the Labyrinth. She gave him a ball of thread so he could find his way back after killing the Minotaur, a creature that was half-man, half-bull. After fleeing Crete with Theseus, she was abandoned by him on the island of Naxos, where the god Dionysus found her and made her his wife.
